aly October 7 blacksmith hetero female the village | She still remembers the night her mother left; she and her brother were huddled together in the hayloft, pretending to be asleep and trying not to hear the shouts that drifted up from below. "This place is cursed! We cannot stay here!" Her mother screamed, and a clatter of something being slammed down hard had made Alyona jump. "And where will we go? This is our home!" Her father had returned. "My family has lived in Elvedon for generations. I will not give up what my father, and his father before him struggled to build because of your... superstitions." "My superstitions? People have gone missing! Will you stay here until the... foul things that lurk in the woods drag you away by your toes? Or will you wait until they take one of the children?!" The argument lasted for hours, even after their voices quieted to a whisper and Alyona fell into a troubled sleep. When she woke up, her mother was gone, and her father had retreated to the bottom of a bottle. She made the best of it, and spent most of her time with her childhood friends, Ileana and Darion, away from the house. It was easy to forget her troubles in their childish games, pretending they were everything they weren't and could never be. When Darion told them he was leaving town, Alyona felt a tightness in her chest, that same sense of abandonment as when her mother left, but she didn't want to miss her chance to say goodbye as she had before, so she smiled and made him promise to come back one day. She went to the docks that morning to see him off, and when Ileana arrived too late, she was there to hug her and assure her that he knew she wanted to be there... he had to know, even though she wasn't sure he did. As the years went on and her father's drinking worsened, it was her brother who shielded her from the worst of their father's alcohol-induced outbursts, even as he took on increasing responsibilities in the forge. If not for her older brother taking over the forge, they probably would have starved. When Ileana's mother died, Alyona was there for her, as she always was, but as her friend started to withdraw, she found herself spending more time with her brother, and he started teaching her the family trade as their father spent more and more time at the tavern. Ever the care-taker, it was Alyona's job to take care of their father as his health and reputation deteriorated, going to the tavern to fetch him late at night, or picking him up out of the gutter in the mornings on the days she couldn't get him to return home. By the time she was eighteen, everyone knew of his drinking problem despite her best efforts to hide it, and he was spending more time in a drunken stupor than he did sober. No one was surprised on the day he was found, cold and dead, in a back alley. Alyona was twenty-two at the time. Since then, Alyona had lived a quiet live with her older brother, helping out in the forge and trying to live a normal life despite the rumors that haunt the town. That came to a grinding halt on the day her brother disappeared, just a few months ago. He just went out one night and never returned. Since then, Alyona's main focus has been trying to find him or find out what happened to him; she fears the worst but is determined to find out anyway, even as she continues to work the forge to pay the bills. |
